3 Dental Sedation Myths: It’s Time to Tell the Truth

Visiting the dentist can be a difficult task for many patients, especially those who suffer from anxiety. Allowing someone to poke and prod inside their mouth or having to sit still for prolonged periods can be enough to make many individuals avoid seeking treatment altogether. However, many professionals are now using dental sedation to create more comfortable experiences, but unfortunately, many myths can keep patients from moving forward confidently. It’s time to debunk three of them, so keep reading.

Myth: Sedation Dentistry Immediately Causes You to Fall Asleep.

There are forms of sedation that are commonly used to help you fall asleep before a procedure – general anesthesia. IV sedation is oftentimes referred to as “sleep dentistry” as well; however, the reality is that the most common forms (i.e., nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and even IV sedation) do not cause you to become fully sedated.

Instead, they help create a sense of comfort and relaxation. Not only will they cause you to feel no pain and remain unfazed by what is happening during your appointment, but it’s also possible that you may doze off. This does not mean you are truly asleep; instead, the dentist will be able to wake you up if necessary.

Myth: Sedation is a Good Option for Everyone.

There is a reason your dentist will have you complete a thorough consultation before receiving dental sedation. A review of your overall health, including any conditions or health problems you might have, as well as your current medications, is required.

The reason is that not all patients are considered good candidates for sedation. Pregnant women, those who are allergic to sedation medications, and individuals with certain medical conditions should not receive sedation.

Myth: Nitrous Oxide Works Like a Truth Serum.

There may be countless movies and television shows that portray patients receiving sedation and spilling their guts to the dentist, but this is simply not true. Nitrous oxide, or any other kind of sedation, does not act like a truth serum. You’ll be too relaxed and at ease to think about oversharing with your dental team.

Asking your dentist about dental sedation is a great way to ensure a positive experience the next time to arrive for an appointment. If you have questions about things you’ve heard or read regarding nitrous oxide or oral conscious, or IV sedation, don’t hesitate to ask. It’s better to get the truth from a trusted professional than to keep believing the myths that exist on the internet.
